I would like to thank every one that competed in and supported the 2008 IDPA Postal Match and especially the members and
club personnel that set up the stages all over the US and around the world. This could not have happened without your hard
work. There were a staggering 2,144 competitors entered in this years match. This was over twice the number of competitors
in last year’s Postal Match and would make the 2008 Postal Match the largest IDPA match ever held. There are some other
impressive numbers to be found in this match.
The total estimated number of rounds expended for this match was estimated at 96,480 and you know there were some extra
shots taken that would push this number higher if they could be counted. There were 129 different clubs that hosted the
match. That means over one third of all IDPA affiliated clubs participated in the Postal Match. The single biggest subcategory
for the match was the Senior category with 409 competitors with another 55 in the Distinguished Senior category. This group made
up 22% of all competitors. I have known for a long time to respect my elders and this is just further proof of my thinking!
It looks like the place to compete this year is in SSP. SSP division had almost twice the competitors in it than ESP and CDP
combined. I attribute some of that to the rise in ammo prices and renewed interest in the 9mm. There is a lot more interesting
data to be found and for a closer look at it click on the Miscellaneous and Match Statistics links found in the score results.
Earlier, I generally thanked everyone that helped set up and shoot the match, but I would like to take a moment to thank some people
individually. First off are our Match Directors Kenneth Ortbach and Leonard Jacukowicz. These guys are the ones that designed, set up,
measured and photographed the stages to help insure that clubs around the world could easily and accurately host the Postal Match.
Thank you, sirs. A ‘thank you’ also to Cindy Bowser who, as I write, is hard at work getting the awards ready for distribution to all
of the competitors that placed in this match. We decided to stop at 10 places this year as some classes and divisions would have
certificates that went to 105th place if we used the 1 in 3 criteria used for sanctioned matches. Good thing this was not a sanctioned
match as we would have had a bunch of people moving up as well! Then we have Jane Fleming of
Beach Bunny Software that wrote the wonderful free scoring software
that we used. I know that there was a little grumbling at first that we required everyone to use this program but I hope you all agree
that entering 2,144 scores from several different scoring programs would be way to much work for any one person or even 10 people to
do. Jane also has one of the best club scoring programs available and it is the one we use to score the IDPA National Championship.
We greatly appreciate her hard work!
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank one more person. He is the wizard and the person behind the curtain that
we usually do not see. We pull back the curtain to find probably the most important person of the match. He has devoted a tremendous
amount of time in making sure that all of these scores were collected, input, collated and many other arcane feats of computer prowess.
The one and only, the scoring wizard and Director of Scoring for Northeast Pennsylvania, Walt Jones. Walt is the man that put all
these scores together, chased down technical issues for clubs and generally kept everything together. Last year, Walt spent a huge
amount of time hand entering scores that came in ranging from custom computer programs to spread sheets to written scraps of paper.
The scoring software written by Jane helped a tremendous amount this year, but it still required a good deal of time on Walt’s part.
I wish to thank him for all of his hard work and I hope that if you see him the range, you take a moment to thank him in person as well.
Thanks again to everyone and I hope that we see your names among the scores next year. Have a great shooting season.
